One of my high school friends gave me one of my guiding philosophies. Her freshly-licensed boyfriend took her out for drive, cocky with his new skills, declaring: It’s important to stay alert to your surroundings. Don’t forget your rear-view mirror.
“He spent more time looking behind him than he did on the road ahead.”
I don’t live in the past. All of my efforts have been to move forward, to get better, to find joy in every moment I’m given.
And yet, I still have to pull up the stakes on the tent I erected to protect me from the elements. No doubt I’ve lived in ignorance of how tied I’ve been. But I can’t un-see what I’ve seen. Now that I know all the ways I have healed, my mind touches those places again. Maybe they’re positive reminders. Maybe they’re gentle reprimands. Maybe they just need to be released and shared.
Maybe I just need to be seen and heard.
